The trip to the United States involved Martí in a journey to another language. To adapt himself to the new space that welcomed his long exile in the U.S., he had to acquire the language that he had once called “barbaric,” English. This article explores not only the translations José Martí made of those who, either as precursors, founders or followers were linked to the Transcendentalist circle, but also their thoughts about the mechanisms involved in the translation process. From his definition, in the sense that translating is transpensar a paper, it is that Martí´s translation style and the new perspective that it brings to the original work are considered. Finally, the study of those translations is essential to set up a thinking network among Martí, Emerson and Whitman and, thus, to complicate and reconsider the influence that a tradition of Anglo-Saxon origin had on the development of Martí’s literature and thought.El viaje a los Estados Unidos implicó para Martí un viaje hacia otra lengua. Para adaptarse al nuevo espacio que lo acogió en su exilio debió aprender a pensar en un inglés que alguna vez denominó “bárbaro”. Se abordan aquí no sólo las traducciones realizadas por José Martí de quienes, sea como precursores, fundadores o epígonos estuvieron vinculados con el círculo trascendentalista sino también sus reflexiones acerca de los mecanismos implícitos en el proceso de traducción. A partir de su definición en el sentido de que traducir es transpensar se considera el estilo de Martí en las traducciones y en la nueva perspectiva que aporta a la obra original. Finalmente, el estudio de estas traducciones resulta fundamental para configurar una red de pensamiento entre Martí, Emerson y Whitman y, así, complejizar y reconsiderar el peso que tuvo una tradición de origen anglosajón en la construcción de la literatura y el pensamiento martianos.Palabras claves: procesos de traducción; Trascendentalismo; José Martí; literatura cubana; cano
